Lady Barbara Manfred (“Babe” to Regency society) was known for her fast ways. Past time for some courageous relative to take her in hand. Lord Clivedon had some interesting ideas for her reclamation—staying with starchy Aunt Graham, the introduction of the sterling (and boring) Lord Ellingwood, instruction from the overbearing Lady Angela, fending off nutty Lord Romeo. But Clivedon couldn’t help appreciating Babe’s originality. . .

Babe edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks
This is one of the best of Joan Smith's works, a frothy mix of charming main characters and interesting secondary characters. When Lady Barbara has made a name for herself with her hoydenish behavior, Lord Cliveden decides that enough is enough and takes over her guardianship in an effort to keep her from entirely ruining herself in Polite Society, or so he believes.Although deeply angry at his high-handed behavior, Lady Barbara begins to realize that Cliveden is right and she is on the verge of living up to becoming the notorious Babe that her behavior has led her into. Toss in several interesting events, a young lord named Romeo who has decided Babe is his Aphrodite, several older ladies who prefer to see her as perfect material for reformation, a case of measles, and of course, Lord Clivden himself, who has come to realize he much prefers the notorious Babe, and you have a sprightly romance that will keep you chuckling right up to the very end.

Babe edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews
but still enjoyable. I just wanted to shake most of the characters in this book and tell them to grow up!
Hadn't read this in several years and the re-read was delightful. A real Regency charmer, BABE is now one of my favorites by Joan Smith.
Five stars all the way. A frothy romp through the regency era with a cast of well drawn and often hilarious characters. Lord Romeo's antics made me laugh aloud. A great read.
Super funny book. A Joan Smith hit!
Great story. One of the things I love about Joan Smith is that her characters are well aware of the seamier side of life, which is true for real people at the time. So many Regency writers make the heroine's experience similar to that of a Disney Princess, where disgrace, infamy, adultery, etc., are mere cardboard cut-outs. Smith, like Heyer, makes it real and a refreshing change from all the sweetness in the usual Regency romance.
One of the reasons I read Joan Smith romances is because each one is different. I waited a long time to download this one because I could tell from the first few pages that it would be a sad book with a happy ending - and I was correct. Babe has lost her family after being spoiled with travel and is now a bored & "poor little rich girl," without a home of her own. She wants a family, but has no clue how to go about finding a husband and making her own "happily ever after." Enter our hero who is still irritated that she stood him up for their only date. Still. Irritated. Yup, he's in love and doesn't know it. She's afraid of being pawned off on the first "suitable" husband without anyone caring for her feelings. It takes a while, but they do finally figure it out, that they're perfect for each other. I found this book stuck in my mind longer than most because of her unhappy life and finally finding someone who cared for her.
One of the best Joan Smith regencies I have read in a while, right below Minuet, my all-time favorite.
Lady Barbara Mansfred a.k.a. Babe is the talk of the ton. She seems to have it all ravishing looks, a fortune, and intelligence and wit, but still isn't married at the ripe old age of 23 after six years on the marriage market. An orphan since she was 17, she's sent to live with a cousin who is much too fun-loving to be a successful chaperone of a young lady, and plunges into one scrape after another until she's the talk of the town and skirts the edges of respectability. She drives a curricle she can't control, dresses in dresses more suited for a matron or *ahem* a lightskirt, and the clubs in London are betting about whether she'll elope or not with an Austrian fortune hunter.
In comes a couple of relatives embarrassed of Babe's notoriety, and determined to take her in hand and straighten her up for a respectable marriage. Lord Clivedon, one of the highest leaders of the Ton and a highly eligible bachelor, becomes her newest guardian. He's never forgotten how she threw him over two years ago, and she's not going to tolerate someone completely restricting her life. Confrontational sparring and witty repartees fly between the two, and before long you're in love with both characters.
Babe might be a little headstrong and stubborn, not to mention childish, but you can sense her vulnerability and desire to please, along with a level-headed attitude toward men and much more intelligence than is credited by the rest of society. Lord Clivedon is the typical I-know-what's-good-for-you-better-than-yourself guardian, and some of his very just criticism would be much easier to swallow without the attitude, but both have a hilarious wry sense of humor and amazing perceptiveness at the world and the people around them. Lord Romeo the artist and dreamer of great talent is a little far-fetched at times, but the character adds nicely to the comic aspect and his head-in-the-air attitude and utter lack of common sense provides a foil for Clivedon.
Excellent book. Pace is fast enough. It felt like every page had enough material to make me laugh out loud.
